Accounting majors, finance majors, and information systems majors should consider joining Beta Alpha Psi.

Editor's Choice

Similar to a business fraternity in that it is co-ed, Beta Alpha Psi is actually an honorary student organization only open to students who meet certain academic and other standards of achievement.

Who Can Join Beta Alpha Psi

Although individual chapters may set higher admission standards, the national office indicates that members should have good moral character, demonstrate academic achievement and/or professional excellence. Eligible students must be pursuing a course of study in the fields of accounting, finance, or information systems.

According to the group’s bylaws, an undergraduate student must demonstrate the following:

  • Declaration of a major or intent to major in accounting, finance, or information systems.
  • Completion of one year of study (30+ credit hours)
  • A GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale

Note: There are different requirements for graduate students and prospective members of non-U.S. chapters.

Career Enhancing Benefits of Student Membership in Beta Alpha Psi

  • Membership is looked upon favorably by employers. The GPA requirement guarantees employers that a student possesses high academic standards and the fact that a student has earned full membership demonstrates a certain level of commitment.
  • Access to key hiring personnel (recruiters, hiring managers). Accounting firms and other companies seek opportunities to speak to the group and hold events just for members. The employer does all of the legwork; all a member must do is show up! Students can use these events to narrow down prospective would-be employers. After a few years of getting to know a company’s culture, students are better equipped to make decisions about which companies/firms to pursue around graduation time. Lucky students may even be courted by several companies at once.
  • It enhances college student resumes. Membership in Beta Alpha Psi can double as an academic and leadership distinction for members who take the extra step and serve as an officer of the club. Each chapter will have, at a minimum, the following four officer positions: president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer.

Other Options Are Available To Those Who Don’t Qualify

Those who do not meet the requirements of joining Beta Alpha Psi at their college may have the option of joining a business fraternity. A business fraternity will also be co-ed and offer access to employers, but the academic requirements may not be as strict. Pi Sigma Epsilon and Alpha Kappa Psi are two business fraternities available at colleges and universities throughout the United States.
