A student doesn't need to spend a lot of money to make a fun Halloween costume. There are several ways students can save money and wear contest-worthy costumes.

Many college students enjoy dressing up in costumes for Halloween, going to Halloween parties, and dancing to Halloween music. While students can purchase expensive costumes, they can also make their own costumes for very little money or no money at all. Students who make their own costumes can create memorable looks while saving their money. The following sections describe ways students can make great Halloween costumes on a budget.

Buy Cheap Halloween Clothes and Accessories From Thrift Stores

Students can go to the thrift stores on their campuses to look for cheap Halloween clothes and accessories. Some of these stores might sell actual costumes. But, if a store doesn’t offer a complete costume, then students should brainstorm costume ideas before they go shopping. Also, it might be helpful to simply walk around the store looking for inspiration from the store’s inventory.

Go to a Fabric Store and Pick Out a Costume Pattern to Sew

If students know how to sew, or have a friend who is willing to sew for them, then they can go to a fabric store and pick out a costume pattern and fabric. Students can control the amount of money they spend on the supplies. Also, students can make an accessory to compliment something they already own, such as a sash or a cape.

E-mail Friends and Ask if Anyone Has a Costume to Borrow

College students can borrow costumes from friends to avoid spending money. Studenta can send an e-mail to their friends asking them to reply with costumes or accessories they have for others to borrow. This way the student can see if there are any complete costumes available, and, if there aren’t any complete costumes, the student might be able to put together a costume with pieces from multiple costumes.

Make a Costume With Old Clothes and Other Household Materials

To save money, students can create Halloween costumes using old clothes, shoes, and accessories. They can also ask their friends, roommates, and relatives to donate their old clothes for their Halloween costumes. These students can also think outside-the-costume-box by using household materials for their costumes. Students can create costumes using boxes, tin foil, fishing string, and even large trash bags.

Whether they choose to make their costumes using old clothes or moving boxes, there are several ways students can create memorable Halloween costumes without spending a dime. In addition to making their costumes, they can also borrow costumes from friends. And, if students don’t mind spending a little money, they can purchase costume patterns from fabric stores, or they can buy items from a thrift store.
